Sinead’s Thoughts
When in Waterford City I love to visit my favorite location in the city to eat, deep in the heart of the Viking Triangle resides the Munster Bar.
As you walk through the doors of this magnificent building you know you are about to experience something special, with its beautiful décor, amazing food and unique history you are truly experiencing the best of Ireland and our hospitality.
The Historic Munster Bar has been run by the Fitzgerald family since 1955, making the most recent generation of the Fitzgerald Family, the 3rd generation to carry on the wonderful tradition of this family run establishment.
First established as an Inn to cater for the Captains and Officers of ships that came to the Port of Waterford, they always found a heartwarming meal and accommodation at the Munster Bar.
This wondrous establishment has bore witness to some of the most important events in Irish History, such as the rising of the first tricolor in 1848 by Thomas Francis Meagher at 33 The Mall.
The Munster Bar is situated just around the corner in both directions from Reginald’s Tower. On14 Baileys New Street in the glorious shadow on the French Church and on 11 The Mall, opposite The House of Waterford Crystal.
The Munster Bar has operated as an Inn since approximately 1822 and has been licensed to sell alcohol since 1853, making it one of Waterford oldest bars.
The food in the Munster Bar is amazing and caters for everyone’s tastes.
With traditional Irish favorites, wonderful seafood and everything else you can imagine. I have personally tried nearly everything on the menu and love it all. No trip to Waterford would be complete without a visit to this amazing bar.
They also have a wide range of beers traditional Irish favorites, as well as a wonderful range of local craft beers. With wonderful coffee and a selection of amazing deserts, all wrapped up in a wonderful atmosphere makes every visit memorable. The staff at the Munster Bar, are amazing and friendly and will make you visit extremely special.
It’s impossible to talk about the Munster Bar without mentioning the magnificent Oakroom.
Deriving its name from the locally crafted oak paneling that dates from 1822 and is protected by a preservation order.
To call this room beautiful is an understatement, every time I walk into this space I am overwhelming by it. You can book this room for private dinners and parties.
The Munster Bar on 11 The Mall, became part of the Munster Bar as we see it today, in 1980, changing from a Garage into the inviting space you enjoy today.
When you visit, even thought you cannot see it, the Medieval City Walls of Waterford run through this building and you are literally walking through history. To say this is my favorite location in Waterford is an understatement; it is an experience not to be missed.
